Snap it against the brow or lash line and you have a crisp, straight guideline to measure and shape against, so symmetry is something you set up before you start rather than something you hope for at the end. Used ahead of tinting, lamination or shaping, and considerably faster than judging the same line freehand. The ink wipes off with water, so the guideline goes the moment you no longer need it.
