Picture it: a client books a lash lift, sits down, and she's wearing a full set of extensions from another salon. She's ready to be done with fills and wants you to take them off and lift her natural lashes, today. Can you? The short answer is no, not in the same appointment, and not over the extensions. Elleebana's guidance is that removal and the lift should be done separately, case by case, after you've assessed the health of her natural lashes.

I know that's not the answer anyone in that chair wants to hear. Including me, honestly. I'd love to say yes. So let me explain why, and what I do instead.

For extension removal itself, I covered that in Can I Do a Lash Lift Right After Removing Lash Extensions? This one covers the questions around it: lifting over a set, and lifting before one.

Why Removal and a Lift Don't Belong in One Visit

This isn't Elleebana being overly cautious. Their own team has removed extensions and lifted in one sitting and had good results, but only when the extensions, glue, remover and primer were all Elleebana's own range. That's the catch. You almost never know what's on a client who walked in from another studio. It's a little like inheriting someone else's science project.

Two things are working against you:

  • Other brands' products vary. Glues, removers and primers aren't all the same, and you can't predict how a lift will behave on lashes that have just been through somebody else's system.
  • You can't see how the set was applied until it's off. Poor isolation and too much glue overload the natural lashes. If her set was applied unsafely, there's a real chance her natural lashes are already damaged, and lifting damaged lashes risks breakage.

That second point is the one I care about most. A lift is a chemical service. The lash in front of you has to be healthy enough to handle it.

What About Lifting Right Over the Extensions?

I get this one too. Extensions come off first, and Elleebana's guidance only covers lifting natural lashes, so I won't pretend there's a technique for lifting over them. My own rule behind the chair is simple: I don't put lifting lotion on a lash that's still wearing an extension. One outfit at a time, please. If you're weighing a specific situation, ask Ellee before you try it.

Read the Natural Lashes Before You Rebook

Once the set is off, take a good look. Healthy natural lashes and lashes that have been through a rough extension history look very different.

Damaged lashes show breakage and trauma. The ends look thinner and weaker, and they often twist off to one side. Those lashes need care and nourishment to recover before they go through any more chemical services.

That's where I shift the client into recovery mode instead of the lift chair. An in-salon Elleeplex ReGen treatment and daily conditioning aftercare at home, like Elleeplex Hyaluronic Boost Serum, help support the hair while it recovers. It's the same thinking I shared in my relift post: condition beats calendar.

So How Long Should She Wait?

Here's where I'll be straight with you: Elleebana's guidance doesn't give a fixed number of days or weeks between extension removal and a lift. It's case by case, based on a thorough lash-health assessment. If her lashes look healthy after removal, you're in a very different position than if they're thin, twisted and broken at the ends.

So I don't hand out a magic number. I book her back for an assessment, look at the hair again, and decide from what I see. If you want a second opinion on a specific client, Ellee can help you think it through.

Going the Other Way: A Lift Before Extensions

Sometimes the question is reversed. You've got a client with very curly lashes who wants extensions, and you want to straighten her lashes first so the extensions sit properly. That one is possible:

  • Do the lift or straightening about 24 hours before the extensions so the lashes have time to return to their normal pH.
  • Your pre-extension cleansing and priming can affect the result, because the reformed bonds may still be somewhat raised, unless ReGen was used as a step 3 to smooth the cuticle.
  • Plan for the grow-out. As the straightening grows out, fills get harder, and she may need a removal and full new set rather than a fill.

And one retail note while we're here: Elleevate Lash Lift Mascara is lovely for lift clients, but Elleebana doesn't recommend it for clients wearing extensions. Make sure your recommendation matches the service she's actually in.

Make It Part of Your Consultation

The easiest fix is catching this before the appointment. Ask about past extensions, lifts, perms and tints on your intake form and when she books. A client who mentions a current set at booking can be scheduled for removal and assessment first, with no surprise and no disappointed client in your chair, and no surprise chemistry lecture while she eyes the door.

The Real Answer

  • No lifting over extensions. They come off first.
  • No removing and lifting in the same visit. Do them separately, case by case.
  • Assess the natural lashes after removal. Thin, weak ends that twist to one side mean she needs recovery before any chemical service.
  • There's no fixed wait time. Her lash health decides, not the calendar.
  • Straightening before extensions works, about 24 hours ahead, with grow-out planned for.

It's not always the answer a client wants on the day, but it's the one that protects her lashes and your reputation. Feel free to always reach out if you're working through a tricky case; I'm always happy to talk it through.

Common questions

Can I remove a client's lash extensions and lift her lashes in the same appointment? Elleebana advises against it. Extension glues, removers and primers vary by brand, and an unsafely applied set may have already damaged the natural lashes. Do removal and the lift separately, case by case, after you've assessed her lash health.

How long after extension removal can I do a lash lift? Elleebana's guidance doesn't set a fixed wait time. It depends on the condition of her natural lashes after removal. If they show breakage, thin weak ends or twisting, focus on recovery and nourishment before any chemical service.

Can I lift curly lashes before applying extensions? Yes. Do the lift or straightening about 24 hours before the extensions so the lashes return to their normal pH. Cleansing and priming before extensions may affect the result, and fills can get harder as the straightening grows out.
